Hints, Tips and Shortcuts

I love quick ways to do things, so on this page I will put lots of hints, tips and shortcuts! You can use shortcut keys as an alternative to the mouse when working in Windows. Keyboard shortcuts may also make it easier for you to work with your computer.

TO SHOW FULL MENUS

Microsoft Office automatically customizes menus and toolbars based on how often you use the commands. When you first start an Office program, only the most basic commands appear in the Menus. Then, as you work, the menus and toolbars adjust so that only the commands and toolbar buttons you use most often appear. To show a full menu simply double click the menu, if you wish to permanently show the full menus

  • Select the Tools menu and then
  • Customise from the Customise dialog box
  • Choose the Options tab
  • Checkmark Always show full menus.
  • Voila! - how many clicks will that save?

Selecting this option in any Microsoft Office application enables it for all Office applications.

EDIT A CELL IN EXCEL

The magic key in Excel (Access & Project too) is F2. You can quickly edit a cell by pressing F2 this puts you into in edit mode.  You can then use Word quick editing keys.

  • Home - will take you to the beginning of the cell.
  • End  - will take you to the end of the cell.
  • Ctrl and left and right arrow - moves you a word at a time - Magic!
